Environmental Risks and Impact

Pumpkin Rock sits within a broader watershed system. Litter left on trails is frequently carried downhill by wind and rain. Plastic can take 100–1,000 years to fully decompose. Cigarette butts are the #1 most littered item globally and contain toxic chemicals that contaminate soil and groundwater. Microplastics have been found in 90%+ of soil samples tested in urban-adjacent natural areas. Plastics and debris entering storm drains and waterways. Contamination of local creeks and downstream ecosystems

Results

Guided by Leave No Trace values, On Trail With approaches stewardship at Pumpkin Rock as a collective community effort. Together with approximately 45 volunteers, the organization removed 115 pounds of trash from the trail area. Equally important, the clean-up was intentionally designed as a family-friendly, all-ages event, using a Halloween theme to engage children and families while teaching the importance of caring for our planet in a fun, accessible, and memorable way.
